How to apply for an Indian PCC from Australia
Many NRIs in Australia would wonder how to apply for the Indian PCC Police Clearance Certificate from Australia. To avoid last-minute hurdles, it is better to start the application process at least a month before applying for a visa.
What is an Indian PCC (Indian Police Clearance Certificate)?
Indian PCC (Indian Police Clearance Certificate is an official document issued by the Indian High Commission/Authorities that states whether the individuals applying have any criminal History or not during their period of stay in India. To apply, you must complete the application and submit it to one of the VFS Global branches in Australia.
What is VFS Global?

Who Needs it:
Indian nationals who reside or are currently residing in India need to apply for Permanent residency, Citizenship or long-term visas, Education/employment, and adoption purposes in Australia.
Foreign nationals who lived in India for education, employment, or other reasons. Foreign nationals’ applications will only be approved with preapproval, and the necessary authorities’ approval or verification is required before a PCC may be issued.
Required Documents:
INDIAN NATIONALS – Download, complete, and print them to apply
- Online Application Form
- Passport
- PCC checklist (You need to tick the relevant sections as yes, whichever apply to you. If you are sending the documents through the post, you need to fill out the Credit Card Authorisation section, which will also authorise the deduction of the money from your bank account.)
- Personal particulars form
- Two recent 2×2 Photos
- Form J (If your appearance has changed, you need to fill it out as well)
- VFS appointment letter (if applying in person)
- If the Indian address given in the online PCC application form differs from the one printed in the Indian passport, please provide a copy of the proof of the new address.

Steps to fill the Online PCC Application form:
Online Application Form: You need to fill out, complete and print the PCC online application form from the Passport Seva website.
If you haven’t already, go to the Passport Seva at the Indian Embassies and Consulates website: https://embassy.passportindia.gov.in/, select the Country as Australia and click on register. It will ask you to choose a consulate or embassy based on location. Choose the branch, e.g., Sydney or Melbourne. After that, fill in the basic details and complete the registration.
Log in to the Passport Seva portal and select Apply for Police Clearance Certificate.
Passport Details:
- Purpose of PCC – Select based on your purpose. For example, if you are applying for a PR, the best option would be for immigration purposes other than citizenship.
- Country for which a PCC – Australia.
- Enter your passport details, etc.
- File Name – you can find it on the address page of your passport
Applicant Details:
- Fill in the required details like names, DOB, Marital status, etc
- Filling the PAN, Adhaar Number, and Voter ID is OPTIONAL
- If you haven’t filled in your Aadhaar number, no need to select I Agree Yes or Not at the end.
- Complete the family details, Residential address, and other details, ticking the answers relevant to you, and proceed to the next step.
PCC Details: – check if all the details are correct, and proceed to the next step
PCC Details Verification
- You will get an overview page of all the details you filled out.
- Make sure all the details are as per your legal documents (IF THERE ARE ANY MISTAKES, YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED OR SENT BACK IF SENT THROUGH POST)
- Scroll down and click “I AGREE”, in the place section “Your present city” based on your location, e.g., Brisbane, and press submit.
- Finally, choose “Yes, all details are correct”
- After submission, you will be redirected to the homepage, where you can see your application below. Once you select the application, you will have the option to print it.
Once you click on print, you will be taken to a new page. If you have a printer, print to it; otherwise, save and take a print from a nearby printing shop.
This will be your application form & you need to attach a photo and make your signature wherever required.
Other documents:
- For other required documents, go to the VFS Global website, https://services.vfsglobal.com/aus/en/ind, and select passport services. Then, choose the Identify passport service type and select the type of passport service.
- You will be redirected to another page. Then select Indian Passport Information as a Police clearance certificate. Here, you will find the required documents based on your situation. Make sure to download, fill out and take a printout, sign & attach photos wherever needed.
Application process:
Once you have all documents ready and printed, which are the PCC Application, Checklist & Personal Particular Form, Passport and other documents mentioned under the required documents above
You can apply by going to the nearest VFS Global branch or by sending it by post to the concerned VFS office location. To apply in person, you need to book an appointment with the closest VFS office through their website. If you are unsure about the VFS branch locations, check out the VFS Global website mentioned above.
If you need your passport urgently, like for an English exam or medicals, you can send colour printed copies of your passport with attestation by a JP or a notary.
Fee:
It may vary based on the application, but it is approximately under $100. There is also a courier fee for sending the document back to you.
Processing times: Usually, it takes within one month, provided no delays because of holidays/uncertain disruptions.
Once you submit in person, you will receive a tracking number with the receipt. Make sure to keep it to track your application. You can also track your application status from your Passport Seva account.
